Investing might seem like it’s just for suit-wearing finance types, but actually, it’s for everyone – and everyone has to start somewhere. You’re on the right track!

You don’t have to know everything or have loads of cash to become an investor. The trick is to inform yourself enough to make a few sensible decisions, then get going with whatever you have. The sooner you start, the more time your money has to grow... and grow.

Top investing hacks

  • As the saying goes, the best time to start investing was 20 years ago, but the second-best time is now. Get your skates on to take advantage of compounding interest as soon as possible.
  • Small amounts are good to start. Work out how much you can afford to invest and use an automatic payment to set aside that money every pay day. Drip-feeding into your investments makes a lot of sense.
  • The money your investment makes for you is called your ‘returns’. They typically come at a cost (fees), so you want to keep those reasonable so they don’t eat away at your results.
  • Different types of investments – known as asset classes – each have their own level of risk and return. Inform yourself on the options and explore what investments you’re best suited to, so you don't lose sleep over yours.
