My money story: Mere

1 March 2012
Reading time: 1 minute

Mere had been fiercely independent all her life and, at the encouragement of her children, reluctantly entered a village environment.

Mere had not explored the village environment before taking up residence. She had always valued her freedom, but found that the close environment of the village made her feel uncomfortable.

The aspects that concerned her involved living closely with other residents, being required to have meals in a hall with other residents at fixed times each day, the resident nurse having a key to her unit and visiting her every 48 hours, video cameras in the grounds, and security guards in the village grounds at night.

On reflection, Mere wished she had taken the time to find out whether or not village life would suit her, as the process of leaving the village was costly and time-consuming.
