Knowledge is power: Plugging those money leaks

“Don’t tell me where your priorities are. Show me where you spend your money and I’ll tell you what they are.” - James W Frick

2007 was the year I lost – then regained – control over my money.

I moved in with my partner, and although I was used to shoestring living (broke uni student and all), having one full-time paycheck along with my part-time income was a luxury we embraced a little too quickly. Budgeting fell by the wayside and before long the question started rearing its head: ‘Where did all the money go?’

Back in those dark days there wasn’t a wealth of apps like there is now, so it was a matter of combing through bank statements and figuring out where all the leaks were. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty…

Once you know what you’re actually spending on, though, you can build a budget that works and get back on top.

(For the record, my money clearly goes towards food in all guises. And - less frequently but in bigger chunks - travel.)
