Ways to spend less this Christmas but have your best summer yet

5 December 2024

We’re all on the countdown to Christmas and summer, and although it might be known as the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be the most expensive. If you’re keen to maximise your money and fun while minimising stress these holidays, put plans in place now and be smart about your budget to avoid a spending hangover in 2025. We’ve put together a cheat sheet you can use from some of the tips shared in our Christmas Planner podcast with The Morning Shift.

Actions you can take tonight

  • Write a list of who you’re buying Christmas presents for, then google some cute, inexpensive options and brainstorm some creative ideas, like framing favourite photos.
  • Consider adding handmade cards or notes that tell the recipient why they’re special to you. Remember, it really is the thought that counts!

Actions you can take this week

  • Create a separate savings account and an automatic payment to add to it, to help cover your extra holiday expenses (you could keep this up year-round).
  • Use our budget planner to see where all your money’s going and help you stay on track.
  • Don’t leave Christmas shopping until the last minute – start sooner rather than later. Spend wisely to bring joy without overspending.
  • Avoid the use of credit cards and buy now, pay later. The financial stress of getting into debt simply isn’t worth it.

Actions you can take next week

  • Make some financial resolutions to set your 2025 up for success. Use our goal planner to plot your plans, then activate automatic payments to send your savings into separate accounts (you can also add photos to customise your Sorted dashboard and boost your motivation).
  • Plan some fun experiences for your family and friends to look forward to over summer. They don’t need to be too pricey; it’s the ideal time of year to simply get together for picnics, barbecues and beach days, which are perfect for making memories.

Christmas can be a fun time, but so often we spend more than we mean to on presents don’t really mean that much. No one wants to miss out on their summer hols because they blew all their cash on Christmas, though, and when our money is hard-earned, it feels good to know we’re spending it on what we really value.
